Working From Anywhere: Tax and Legal Implications of Cross-border Remote Work

The impacts of COVID-19 are revolutionizing the way we work like never before. Many companies are seeing that remote working arrangements can work effectively, and employees are demanding more flexibility in the way they work. As with any significant change, there are many issues to consider and risks to manage, but also valuable opportunities.

According to KPMG’s recent CEO Outlook Survey, talent risk is the biggest emerging risk for CEOs in Canada and abroad, with CEOs recognizing the need to keep their people feeling safe but also connected, engaged and productive. Many companies are exploring the meaning of “Work from anywhere”, and whether they will allow their employees to work remotely from other jurisdictions. The majority of companies are also foreseeing benefits from this new way of working, with 76% of CEOs indicating that remote working has widened their potential talent pool.
